It isn't every day that something you learn in school gets confimed right before your eyes. Sure, I learned that the North won the Civil War, but did they really? I wasn't there. Were you? And how often does the derivative of (3x+5) come into play in your every day life? I'm willing to bet not too often.

Yet there I was yesterday perusing the aisles of Barnes & Noble like the sophisticated intellectual that I am (right) when I spotted an elderly gentleman poring through books in the Love & Sex section. Now by elderly, I mean really old, and by that I mean, I could have sworn he was on the dinosaur next to Fred in the opening of the Flintstones, and by poring through I mean, practically taking notes. It was like he was studying for the MCATS or something. But, what could this old guy be so eagerly reading in the Love & Sex section? Obviously, I had to take a closer look.

What I saw was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. He was going through pages and pages of naked photographs of people in different sexual positions and reading about how to have a better sex life! I'm telling you this guy was so old that when he walked he had that whole "Old Person's Harlem Shake" thing going on, and yet here he was trying to liven up his time in the sack. I have to admire his determination. It's great.

And while the thought of this guy doing his thang is an image I don't really want in my head, last semester I had the pleasure of taking Optimal Aging, EDSP401, with Professor Savage-Stevens, the coolest old lady ever. The entire class is about old people and one of the things she told us was that with the advent of Viagra and similar drugs, old people are going at it like teenagers again. In fact, statistically, all across America, the most common time for the elderly to go bed-hopping in elderly homes and communities is Thursday afternoons. Why? Because their grandkids visit on Fridays and Saturdays. I didn't believe it at first to be honest, to me, the whole thing sounded kinda iffy.

But there he was, this 75 year+ old guy, brushing up on the Flying Lotus or Crouching Dog or whatever on a Wednesday. The day before Thursday. Coincidence? I think not! And while I am sure there are tons of other things I've learned here at Maryland that I would have liked to have been confirmed in the real world, I was kind of happy that it was this. It was comforting in a way to know that this old guy was getting lucky, and not just lucky, but all kinds of freak-nasty lucky. It made me smile all day. Good for you random Barnes&Noble old guy. Good for you.
