Some days I have to do a little thinking to get my topic for the day's post. Other days, the topic just seems to fall into my lap. The latter describes the way I came across the subject of today's post.
I came back from work last night at about 10:15 and saw that my roommate had checked the mail and left it on the living room table. Expecting movies from Blockbuster, I went through the mail to not only find my movies, but an official looking letter addressed to me from Imperial Majesty Cruise Line Vacataions. It also said "Claim Your Free Cruise Inside!"
Now, obviously, my immediate reaction was to assume it was some marketing scam or time-share offer, but I decided to open it anyway, just for a good laugh. However, much to my surprise, upon opening it that it looked legitimate. Extremely legitimate. So much so, that when I showed my roommates, hoping they would tell me I was out of my mind, they gave me their cellphones to call the number and claim my cruise. Which I did. Here is the conversation that ensued.
Agent: Hello, Imperial Majesty Cruise Lines, can I have your name?
Me: Adam Beaton
Agent: Confirmation number? It is located on the front of your voucher.
Me: 389275981
Agent: Okay, let me pull up your itinerary. Just one second....Ah yes, it seems you've been selected based on your location, history of travel, and standing with Visa, for a free 3 nights at the Ramada Plaza Resort in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida followed by a 2 night cruise on with our cruise line to Nassau, Bahamas, followed by a 2 nights at the Ramada Plaza Resort in Orlando Florida. You will also be provided with 7 days of transportation via rental car from Alamo, free of charge.
Me: Um, what?
Agent: Are you still living at 4330 Hartwick Rd, College Park, Maryland?
Me: Yeah? Um...
Agent: Terps fan eh? Go Terps!
Me: Yeah, go Terps. How exactly did I get this again?
Agent: Like I said based on your travel history, your Visa record, and your location. So basically, I'm going to go ahead and send out your registration forms. You just call us up within 60 days of when you'd like to leave and we'll send you on your way.
Me: That's it. No catch? It's free.
Agent: That's right. No catch. Free. And for signing up today, you get two more free trips as a bonus! 3 days in Las Vegas, and 4 days in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!
Me: And that's it?
Agent: You got it! Now you get all three of those trips for one easy payment of $768!
Me: Wait, what?!
Agent: Is that not affordable to you right now?
Me: No it's not "affordable." You literally just told me it was free.
Agent: Okay, well what is more affordable?
Me: Gee, I don't know, $5?
Agent: ...you only have $5?!
Me: I didn't say that, I just said that's what's affordable.
Agent: How about $400? You can even pay it off over the next twelve months, and get the trips up front?
Me: No! This says free, you just sold me on "free!"
Agent: You're in college right?
Me: Yeah. Why?
Agent: Have you studied American History?
Me: Yeah.
Agent: When in the history of America, have you heard of anyone giving anything away for free? C'mon!
Me: But I asked you if there was a catch.
Agent: ::Click::
Hmm, I guess I no longer presented myself as an optimal client to try out their new hotel package. I can't imagine why. The Ramada and Imperial Majesty Cruise lines are full of shit.

Hey! Looks like they've come to the UK now. I got a cold call earlier, and found your blog entry after doing a bit of googling.
Key phrases in the call include:
This is a public opinion poll. You will receive two free boarding passes for an all inclusive cruise to Nassau Bahamas
In agreement with this confirmation, you are responsible for a $59 per person US Governmental Port and Service Fee paid directly to the cruise line fulfilment centre.
Please note, this is a complementary offer - you have neither won this, nor is it a prize.
The guy says it’s Imperial Majesty Cruise Line, the picture shows Regal Empress Cruise Vacations
During the call, I am told to go to http://www.householdsurvey.com/ - this is a login page and site loaded with Google Ads.
Anyway, I managed to record the whole thing, which is as a podcast on my blog:
http://www.digitaltoast.co.uk/free-imperial-majesty-nassau-cruise
... and they're still in the UK. I got a call yesterday. I'm curious where they got my telephone number from - it's not listed and I'm very careful who I give it out to!!
i too just got a call from these people... im sold on the free crusise... but then there always is a catch... Fuck these scamers... they shouldnt be allowed to operate like this.... if they advertise something as free ... then it should be so.... We should launch a class action law suit on these people for false advertising. This is BULL SHIT!
And still it goes on.
Yep still going and in the UK, only now its an automated digital line. Thanks for the postings
We moved flat at the end of May. Kept our original number. They have called every day since we moved house (near enough two months!!!)
It's an automated message from some girl called Demetria. I don't bother listening to the whole message. I emailed Imperial Majesty Cruise Line asking where they got our phone number as we are ex-directory but haven heard anything yet. It is inconvinient but at least an email address is slightly easier to change than a phone number if I need to.
Hi i crossed your blog while i was looking up information on the cruises..[imperial cruises] the fact is that they ARE free..the cruise..is free.. BUT there are port charges that the city charges..i mean usually they are 200 or more. I had a friend who went on a cruise through them and she loved it.. and I'm going on one with my bf soon. Nothing in life is free but it can damn sure be cheap!
Hi
Yes, they are still about! I'm from Yorkshire, England, and was suspicious of a call from "Donna" and other people. It's so infuriating and totally misleading when they say it's free then in the next breath ask for your credit card details and a sum of money! Totally outrageous - they need stringing up!!
I am very grateful I googled the telephone number given to ring back on one call I received and found out about other people's experience of this sham organisatsion!
the rang me some weeks ago. I have since ignored their phone messages telling me to ring a number to varify details. Today they in person rang (at least it was their phone bill) to explain the details of the cruise and additional days at Orlando and Ft lauderdale all for $399 pp. They wanted me to give card details so that the holiday could be held for me for up to 18 months. I declined to give the details and asked them for their details so that I could do a check on them, needless to say they wouldn't hold the holiday for me.
I am in the uk & got this call just last week. Wasted 5-10 minutes answering & listening to the call. Thought it sounded a bit fake, & now have seen tons of messages complaining about this company. They should be fined big time for wasting peoples time like this!!
I love a good mystery, and I love nailing scammers. Got the call earlier whilst on the laptop, so was able to jot all the deets down before I forgot them (these kinda calls we get all the time).
I'm gonna dig around and see what I can find out about these scammers and then blog about them. Good to see others with similar ideas!
